Before you make any decisions on these you need to check out how noisy they are! The fan on our oven is really loud and it carries on for AGES after you turn oven off (honestly about 20-25 mins). This is a real consideration in a kitchen diner because you will hear it whilst you're eating - annoying! The extractor fan on the hood is also pretty loud so it can get pretty noisy in our stable/kitchen.
Also re induction hobs. As before I bl**dy love the hob, it's got heat from 1-9 and 9 is v hot v quickly. My mum's (Siemens) goes up half increments. V frustrating takes ages to scroll thru and I'm not convinced you need that level of precision. It also beeps the whole time you're selecting. As you can tell I'm a bit of a (control) freak. Which? Reviews sometimes have some info re noise but you could also try looking at user reviews on john lewis or similar.

Melanie comments on Designing The Perfect Family-Friendly Kitchen

Hi ya
I bought one of those in counter bins for our kitchen but ended up not having the work surface for it. Our man drawer usually contains spare lightbulbs, batteries, a timer for the light when we go away, various instruction booklets on how to work the fridge/cooker/microwave etc, Keys, random puncture repair kits, pens, the dogs micro chip documents, random things needed for around the house, rennies, paracetamol, euros or other foreign currency, chargers...I could go on. You can see why you need a big drawer!

Simply The Nest comments on Designing The Perfect Family-Friendly Kitchen

Hi everyone - thanks so much for the input!

Jay - good idea re eBay. I've heard about people picking up 'damaged' appliances that basically have tiny scratches on the side that are invisible once installed, so fingers crossed we'll come across something suitable when we start looking.

Red - yes our post is always dumped on the dining table too, I'm looking forward to a more efficient solution!

Anna - you're so right regarding granite, I can just imagine accidentally whacking wine glasses on it while unpacking the dishwasher.

Jayne - the man drawer, intriguing! What does it contain? Yes to lots of clean work surface, I hate having stuff sitting on mine cos it takes up too much space and ends up getting splashed with random food friendly fire.

Mark - seriously, carpet in a kitchen? Yikes!

Housey - good to hear you confirming all the things I plan to include and intend to avoid :-) I've heard it's tricky to keep granite shiny - and while I don't mind maintaining wood with a sand and oil once a year, but I definitely don't want to be polishing metres of granite on a daily basis. I'm chuckling at the kitchen looking like a stable, I think with our two tan and white Jack Russells thrown into the mix ours would probably look like similar if we had a dark floor! Slovenly housewife alert - we installed under-cabinet lighting in our old kitchen and it looked amazing, the kitchen basically appeared to be floating on light - fast forward a couple of years post-children and no time to sweep/vacuum daily, and the lighting basically illuminated every dog hair, crumb and dust bunny. Realistically we need to either hire a cleaner or to nix the under-cabinet lighting!

Any more ideas? Keep 'em coming!
